If you haven’t yet heard, there’s a growing trend and it’s called the arcade bar. And, here at Platinum City Gaming, we’re joining in on the fun. If you’re not familiar with arcade bars, they’re essentially an arcade that serves alcohol to those of legal drinking age. Arcade games and a bar … what is more fun than that?

Nostalgia takes over

As you enter the door, you’re greeted by the unmistakable sounds of bells, beeps, and drawn out tunes letting you know your game is over. Aahh – the childhood memories. Crowded rooms, waiting in lines with your quarter ready to challenge the next winner, the height of the arcade was a time that will never be forgotten.

Even into the early adult years when adventuring out to bars was a common practice, arcade games were ready and waiting to be played. From tabletop games to coin operated races and pinball – the games were there and memories were made. In fact, some of our favorite customers here at Platinum City Gaming met over a good old fashioned match of Pong!

Enter the Adult Aspect of Gaming

Now, we’d love to take credit for creating the arcade bar. But, in reality, bars were some of the first testing grounds for video games. In 1971, Atari’s co-founder, Nolan Bushnell, introduced one of the first video games, Computer Space, while at the same time, two Stanford University students were creating Galaxy Game. The two games became the first cabinet games available and were tested in, you guessed it, common adult gathering areas.

After a few years of testing, the mass production of Pong came along and made its way into the bar scene. During the late 70s and 80s Atari continued using bars as their testing ground for newly released coin operated games. A trend that never faded, but only increased in demand. From bars to casinos, adults love gaming just as much (if not more) than the littlest gamer in your life.

So, there you have it. A condensed version of how the arcade bar came to be. Of course we left out many details, but we think you get the gist! At Platinum City Gaming, we’re excited to offer gamers of all ages a safe place to enjoy some time away!
